Some films beloved by both (a Casablanca or Gone With the Wind) have endured. Some loved by critics or the public haven't.

I still found Boyhood to be quite dull with an uninteresting main character, more about the experiment of taking so long to make it than about the final product itself, but to each his own.Rickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16611922269342141654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6334926894764753088.post-2449495486603109012017-08-27T07:08:33.274-06:002017-08-27T07:08:33.274-06:00There are many things here that are matters of per...There are many things here that are matters of personal taste or personal reaction, and a few things you're factually off on (maybe to be expected with a film of epic scope that is intentionally "elliptical" in how minor figures comes and go), but my bottom line is that the movie is an extraordinary achievement, and your prediction of its being forgotten in a few years won't hold up. I think people will continue to return to this, and someday it will give an idea of what life was like at the turn of the 21st century.

Something I realized after watching it is that when I remember a particular year in my life, say, when I was 12, I don't really remember "big" things. There are some very dramatic developments in this movie, like the scariest parts of Olivia's bad second marriage, but what's memorable in life is one's personal equivalent of the scene in which the girl invites Mason to the party, and she's riding her bike along while he walks. That sequence, around 2009 in the movie's timeline, was beautifully understated...which isn't a bad description of the whole movie. There is shaping here (as I understand it, very little leftover footage existed), but it captures life being lived, what endures in people and what evolves. He isn't particularly interesting as a person to care enough about, and as time has passed I think people will forget Boyhood.Rickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16611922269342141654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6334926894764753088.post-64609294712896303472017-02-06T04:45:37.685-07:002017-02-06T04:45:37.685-07:00Not sure if anyone is still following this blog, b...Not sure if anyone is still following this blog, but I just want to say I fully agree with this review. I thought I was the only one NOT thinking this was such a great movie. What a loser Mason Evans (jr.) is - I'm glad he's not my son! What a snowflake! Sure, it might have taken a lot of effort, but does that make a good in itself? Of course not. I have not seen of the movie, but I feel like I won't be missing anything by skipping it. Excellent review Rick.

-JamesJames the Reviewerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00165238905288033483noreply@blogger.com
